Cheadle Remembers the Great War

Commemoration | Cheadle Discovery and Visitor Centre
Dates From | 08 Jan 2015 to 11 Dec 2015

Displays relating to Cheadle and the impact the Great War had on the community. The men on Cheadle’s War Memorial will be remembered in a fixed display with other displays changing throughout the year. These include

  • War News – a rolling display showing what was happening during the war on key dates.
  • Horses and the Great War
  • The Requisition of Cheadle Horses
  • The War Poetry of Charles Masefield
  • Local Poetry from the Cheadle and Tean Times
  • War in the Air
  • Letters from the Front, published in the Cheadle and Tean Times
  • Life in the Trenches – watch out for rats!

In 2015 the Discovery Centre’s displays will focus on the local men who survived the Great War. The Royal British Legion (Cheadle Branch) are compiling a list of these men, it is hoped that the displays will encourage people to come forward with names and information. In October and November a display shall focus on the local industries during wartime. This will be the last official display of the Cheadle Remembers the Great War project, but further Great War related displays in 2016 are likely.
